Chess Explained: Why the Sicilian is Better Than the Caro

With Halloween looming, Fabian and I go over some famous chess discoveries, including one that hits close to home.

Fabian and I are just getting started when it comes to celebrating this year’s Halloween.

Welcome to another video for our “How to Beat Your Mom at chess” series1, this time on the discovery tactic. Boo!

The lesson is also definitive proof of the superiority of the Sicilian Opening over the Caro-Kann. As The Queen’s Gambit character Benny puts it, The Caro Kann is “all pawns and no hope.” Well in this famous miniature that Fabian and I analyze, between Reti and Tartakower, it’s more like “all hope and no air.” If you’re not convinced yet, don’t despair. Upcoming videos will feature crash courses in openings to give you a taste of what you may want to try next—and what to avoid.
